Noted local state representative Cheryl Coakley Riveria has long been mentioned as the future mayor of Springfield. Masslive.com had this wonderful piece about ‘ole Cheryl here. A few highlights:
It was 1979, and we all knew that Jimmy Carter would crush Ronald Reagan she was 15 and she had her first job bagging groceries- assistant camp counselor. Today, she serves as state representative for the city’s 10th Hampden District, nearly a decade after she became the first Hispanic elected to the Legislature.”I was an State Rep assistant counselor, and I was finally not a kid anymore in the state house camp. I was able to make decisions.
Yeah, 15 and not a kid anymore. Why is it that with the Mayor’s race heating up, The Republican decides to write this puff piece? Let see, Incumbent Mayor Charlie Ryan a 79 year old father of an Irish dozen, fiscal watchdog, and one heck of a corruption fighter versus Dom Sarno, a current city councilor who in the eyes of many was asleep at the wheel when the FBI was brought in to clean up a municipal corruption epidemic under former Mayor Michael Albano. Due to the fallout from the Albano administration Springfield’s finances were placed under the control of the Commonwealth’s appointed Finance Control Board. But the Springfield Republican suffers from the curse of so many city newspapers; they aim to preach a “progressive” dialogue, and because of Ms. Coakley-Riveria’s progressive politics, and her personal background, the Republican usually gives her a free ride. It would seem to many others looking in that she is a meddling interloper in City Hall. Why not just run for the position?
Just wondering.
